How To Use FTP

Download an FTP Program. We strongly recommend CuteFTP or WS/FTP. Check out www.download.com to get a hold of either program. In this demonstration we'll use IPSwitch's WS/FTP program.

You can get a free copy of WS_FTP LE: at Download.com.

If you are using WS/FTP you will see a sessions property window (users of CuteFTP review the CuteFTP manual for more information.) Below is what you are asked for and what you need to enter:

A.) Profile Name: Optional - Use as a reference
B.) Host Name / Address: - Enter the IP address or host name here. Example, "mydomain.com" or "65.172.222.245". Leaving out the quotes.
Note: You cannot use the host name on your new server until the domain name has propagated though out the Internet - usually 24/48hrs after updating with new name servers.
C.) Host Type: Leave it on auto detect
D.) UserID: This has been sent to you in your welcome e-mail. In case you forgot it, it is usually the first eight letters of your domain name
E.) Password: This has also been sent in your welcome letter. Be aware that your password is case sensitive.

OK, your ready, just click the connect button and away you go!

On the right you'll see your web space. Whatever you upload there will be viewable on the web. On the left are the files in your hard drive. Double clicking, or dragging one of those files to the field on the right will upload it into your web space. To begin, browse to the folder on your hard drive that has your web site. (Clicking the arrow at the top of that screen will move you up a directory - double clicking on a directory will move you into that directory.)

Highlight the files you want to move, click the arrow pointing from the left to the right. The files should begin transferring.
